E.M. Baker School
Great Neck, NY
June 19th 2015
Fifth-graders at the E.M. Baker School have been challenged to “pay it forward” (responding to a person’s kindness to oneself by being kind to someone else) and make their mark on the world. In an attempt to help pay it forward, the students have looked to teacher Mr. Christopher Pendergast and his courageous fight against A.L.S. as inspiration. At the beginning of this school year, the fifth-grade students took part in a "Choose Kind" assembly. After viewing an inspirational video that challenged each student to spend this school year "paying it forward", the presentation closed with some familiar faces taking part in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. All of the 5th grade teachers took the plunge, ice-water and all, in an attempt to inspire their students to help fight this disease. In an effort, the 5th graders organized two events to help raise funds and awareness to combat this disease.
First, the students held an annual cardboard arcade, titled, E.M. Baker's Arcade. It was here that students displayed their very own arcade, made entirely out of cardboard and recycled items! The students spent months researching arcade games, structures, while planning and creating these games.
Up next, the students are organizing a "Fun Run" to be held on Friday, June 19th! It is here, where the fifth grade students will take to the Baker field to help run for a cure! We are asking for any students or families interested in supporting our cause to please donate toward this worthwhile cause.
Together, we can defeat ALS.
