On Saturday, May 2, 2020 the annual Fiesta 5K event was cancelled but it became a virtual event.  Since our team "running for cArLSon" has been participating annually since 2010, we could not let this COVID-19 pandemic interrupt our 11 year streak.  And this is our 11th year!  While we are not gathering in person, we still want to support The Robert Packard Center for ALS Research at Johns Hopkins through donations.  All donations go to ALS Research.

I was diagnosed with ALS in October 2008. I consider myself blessed because the progression of my disease has been relatively slow and I've already had a full and rewarding life.  But how do you fight a disease that always wins?  There is no cure or treatment for ALS and it is always fatal.  The answer is "never give up".

I walked the 5K in 2010 and 2011 with the help of a cane and wheelchair.  In 2012 I did not cover the 5K distance but was a spectator and enjoyed watching the 92 members of our team "Running For cArLSon" compete (they were all winners!)

I've never been much for sitting on the sidelines. So in 2013, 2014 and 2016, I covered the distance in a manual wheelchair with the help of friends and family.  In 2017, I completed the 5K in my power wheelchair with Marlie, my service dog, by my side.  In 2018 and 2019,  I cheered all the runners as they crossed the finish line.

I have been in three clinical trials & various studies for ALS research at Johns Hopkins. I don't know if those trials will be of any benefit to me, but I am confident that they will be of benefit to future ALS patients.  But that's how I fight this disease.

I hope you will consider supporting me and the important work of the Packard Center by making a contribution.
