On May 5, 2018, I will be participating in the Packard Center's Fiesta 5K and Fun Run! All proceeds from the event will benefit the Packard Center for ALS Research at Johns Hopkins.
The Packard Center for ALS Research at Johns Hopkins is a non-profit organization devoted solely to finding treatments and a cure for ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. It's a unique organization on the cutting edge of ALS research and a worthy charity. The Packard Center is supported entirely by philanthropy, and needs our help. Currently there is no cure for ALS…help us give hope!
In May of 2007, I walked my first Fiesta 5k in memory of my close friend, Tim McGehee who passed away in March of 2007 from ALS, 9 months after his diagnosis. I made a commitment to run the Fiesta 5k the following year. In May 2008 I ran and completed the 2nd annual Fiesta 5K race.
This started my passion for running that I find mind clearing and good for the body and soul. I have never missed a Fiesta 5k and completed many 5K`s, 10K`s, 1/2 marathons, and marathons.
These events lead to my greatest physical achievement. In January 2017, I completed a Full Distance Triathlon finishing first in my age group.
Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try. Winners are not people who never fail, but people who never quit.
I have a lot of great achievements and some hard obstacles in my life. None are greater or tougher than the one I`m facing now. On September 9, 2016 my doctor gave me the official ALS diagnosis, also known as Lou Gehrig disease.
I want everyone who reads this to realize that you never know what tomorrow will bring. So live life today!
I hope you will consider supporting me and the important work of the Packard Center by making a contribution. Please donate what you can by selecting the "Click Here to Sponsor Me" button.
Our efforts will help make a big difference !
Here’s more of my story:
I ran my first marathon in October of 2010 in Baltimore. I was planning to run the Baltimore marathon again in 2011, however in September 2011, I had a tragic tractor-mower accident and nearly lost my left foot. The accident left me unable to run in October. Saddened by the fact I might not ever run again, I could only watch the marathon on TV.
After a long recovery and rehabilitation, I ran my first 5K since my injury; The Packard Center Fiesta 5K in May of 2012. I then completed the Baltimore marathon 13 months after my injury.
After my recovery I focused more on cycling, competing in duathlons. Not challenged enough, I wanted to complete a triathlon. A triathlon includes swimming, biking and running. Although I was not a swimmer, I signed up for swimming instruction. Three months later I completed a sprint triathlon and have since completed multiple distance triathlons.
Five years to the day after my foot injury, September 2016, I completed the Savageman triathlon. In March of 2010 the Savageman was rated the hardest race on earth by triathlete.com. Then again in July 2015 was named the toughest triathlon by livestrong.com.
In October 2016 I ran a marathon in Baltimore and in November, the New York City marathon.
In 2017 I completed a full distance triathlon in January, the Ironman Maryland Triathlon in October, the Seagull Century 100-mile bike ride, and the Marine Corps Marathon. In April I participated for the second consecutive year in the American Odyssey Relay which is a 2-day, 200-mile, 12-man relay and I am planning to participate again this year.
"I want to inspire people. I want people to look at me and say that because of you, I didn’t give up."
To finish I’d like to quote Lou Gehrig "So I close in saying I might have been given a bad break, but I have an awful lot to live for".
Be your best every day!
Thank you !
