LAX Out ALS

Lax Out ALSIn 2004, Northport High School biology teacher David Deutsch was diagnosed with ALS. Students of Northport High school rallied behind their teacher and started a grass roots fundraising effort called A Midwinter Night’s Dream. To date, this grass roots student effort has raised 3.5 million dollars in the fight against ALS. David’s legacy as a teacher was to allow students to dream, inspire them to reach goals, and push them to believe that nothing was impossible. David’s legacy grows in every student at Northport High school and we believe his ideology can be spread to other students and school districts. Last year, AMND partnered with the Robert Packard Center for ALS Research at Johns Hopkins in a student fundraising initiative entitled Team Packard.

The goal of Team Packard is to empower students to make a difference in the fight against ALS and to promote service learning and collaboration amongst students and school communities in the program. In our inaugural year, Team Packard registered 16 schools nationwide and raised $102,000 for ALS Research.

One successful initiative last year was entitled “Lax out ALS”. Cold Spring Harbor High School held the first ever “Lax out ALS” event during one of their Varsity boys lacrosse games. They collected donations at the game, sold T-shirts, landed some corporate sponsors and raised awareness for ALS with a short halftime presentation. The Cold Spring Harbor High School community raised $5000 for ALS Research. This year Team Packard is looking for more schools to join the “Lax out ALS” initiative.
